The first private clinic in Canada opened in Calgary in 1993. A number of clinics have opened since. Today, 40 private clinics are operating in Nova Scotia, Quebec, Alberta, British Columbia, Saskatchewan and most recently, Manitoba. For a brief period of time, five private clinics operated in Southern Ontario.

The Health Canada Act says diagnostic testing, unless it is provided in a hospital, is not an insured service - this means that clinics can charge for services, not violating the Act.
